Molong Water Quality Update
Cabonne Council has responded to recent community concerns regarding the taste and odour of drinking water supplied to Molong and surrounding areas.
The warm weather, limited inflows and the dam not overflowing have created ideal conditions for rapid algal growth. Although a large destratification mixer is in operation, rising water temperatures have contributed to the development of algae, which can cause aesthetic issues without compromising safety.
In response, the Molong Water Treatment Plant has increased treatment processes, including:
- Higher chlorination levels to control algae
- The addition of powdered activated carbon to reduce taste and odour
- More frequent backwashing of filter beds
Council has also undertaken extensive work across the water network, including scouring storage reservoirs and flushing reticulation pipes to improve water quality.
To ensure ongoing safety, increased water testing is being conducted. Samples are sent weekly to NSW Health for independent verification that the water continues to meet Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
Taste and odour issues caused by algal activity are unpredictable and can occur suddenly, making response measures necessarily reactive. Residents are reassured that although the algal outbreak has caused noticeable changes, the treated water supplied through the Molong Water Treatment Plant remains safe to drink.
