Monash Uni Releases Inaugural Racism Report

Monash University

Monash University has today published its inaugural 2025 Annual Report: Disclosures of Racism and Institutional Response.

In line with the University's ongoing commitment to accountability and transparency, the report outlines Monash's institutional responses to racism-related incidents that have been reported to Monash's Safer Community Unit during the 2025 reporting period.

The report is an important element of Monash's broader and ongoing commitment to addressing racism and builds on several important and sustained steps the University has taken to eliminate racism and foster social cohesion within our community.

This includes affirming our institutional commitment to truth‑telling and Treaty through the establishment of the Yoorrook Taskforce, and embedding this commitment within Impact 2030 and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Framework 2019–2030, alongside advancing Indigenous leadership, research and advocacy through the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous).

The University has also invested $2 million into establishing and expanding social cohesion initiatives including the Campus Cohesion Project, which is driving research into antisemitism, Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism including a survey of nearly 4,000 students from across Australian campuses; and the Brave Conversations Project, which has equipped over 1,000 academics at Monash and beyond to support classrooms where dialogue and disagreement are constructive pathways to learning.

Monash University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Senior Vice-President Professor Allie Clemans said the annual report was developed to provide transparency to our community about the nature and number of concerns raised or reported to Monash, and to provide insights into how the University has responded.

"We are unequivocally committed to ensuring every staff member and student can raise concerns about racism through trusted, confidential and well-supported channels. Creating an environment where people feel safe to speak up, confident they will be heard, respected and supported, is fundamental to who we are and the culture we are building together," Professor Clemans said.

"We recognise that this commitment is ongoing and we are dedicated to listening, learning and taking meaningful action to strengthen a culture where racism is actively challenged and every member of our community feels respected, supported and able to thrive."

Monash University's inaugural 2025 Annual Report: Disclosures of Racism and Institutional Response follows the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) Racism@Uni Study, released on Tuesday 17 February. Read Monash's statement on the Racism@Uni Study here.
