Monash University has climbed 18 spots in the 2019 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) ShanghaiRankings results released today, ranking 73rd in the world, up from 91st in 2018.
President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Gardner AO welcomed the significant improvement in Monash's global standing, saying the rise reflected the University's focus and enduring commitment to excellence, measured by the highest international standards.
"This outstanding performance demonstrates Monash University's strong commitment to developing and recruiting the finest talent and our deep engagement with industry and government partners in Australia and overseas."
"The result is further recognition of Monash as an influential, innovative university on the international stage, and of our capability to serve the community and create a positive impact upon the world around us. Underpinned by the highest standards in education and research, our collaborative, multidisciplinary projects enable us to achieve this, at scale," Professor Gardner said.
The latest ARWU rankings follow the recent release of the ShanghaiRankings' 2019 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), in which Monash ranked second in Australia, with the No.1 national spot in nine subjects.
Monash was among the nation's top-performing institutions in the ARWU rankings, with three entries in the global top 10, and 17 subjects ranked internationally in the top 50. Monash Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was No.1 nationally, and the University's highest globally ranked subject at No.7 in the world.
The announcement also follows the new Times Higher Education World Reputation rankings, where Monash rose 17 places to place in the top 100 universities in the world.
About the ARWU ShanghaiRankings
Since 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world's top 500 universities annually, based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data. ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance. Approximately 1800 universities are ranked by ARWU every year, and the top 1000 universities are published.
