Monash Youth Services, in conjunction with the Monash Youth Ambassadors, has released a report from an extensive survey of almost 1400 local young people conducted last year.
The survey consulted 1394 people aged 10-25 in the City of Monash, over a six-week period in May and June 2021. It explored their interests and the issues that affect them with the aim of understanding what young people in the City of Monash are most concerned about.
The survey's findings will assist Monash Youth Services in being responsive to the ever-changing needs of young people in the community.
Of added importance, last year's survey is the first that has attempted to understand Monash young people's experiences of living through the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges they have faced in such difficult times.
The 2021 survey, which was available online and in hard copy format, was designed, implemented and analysed by Monash Youth Ambassadors, with support from Monash Youth Services and guidance from Council's Communications Department.
The Monash Youth Ambassadors (YABS) are a group of up to 20 young people, aged 10-25, who consult with other young people in the community to hear their concerns and perceptions on current issues, and assist Monash Youth Services in appropriately responding to these needs.
Among a range of findings, the biggest concerns expressed by the respondents fell under the categories of mental health, school or study problems and coping with stress. The report also analyses concerns by age group and gender, with issues including the environment, physical health, gender diversity and sexuality, body image, employment and discrimination among those of concern to Monash young people.
In relation to COVID-19, the report examines the social, mental health and education impacts experienced by young people during the pandemic.
Monash mayor Stuart James said the survey would enable young people to have an active voice in their local community.
"The Monash Youth Ambassadors contributed to the survey design, data collation and report making, indicating just how engaged and capable Monash young people are in contributing to their local community," Cr James said.
"The survey report demonstrates the concerns and needs of young people in the Monash community, and it will be invaluable in guiding the direction and actions that Council and Monash Youth Services will adopt in 2022 and beyond.
"It is also pleasing that the Youth Ambassadors were passionate about reaching out to less represented young people to hear their voice."
A youth-friendly version of the 2021 Monash Youth Survey report has been designed and produced by the Monash Youth Ambassadors, with support from Monash Youth Services, and highlights the survey's key findings in the form of an infographic video.
