Works have commenced to reconstruct the corner of George Street and River Street in Moonbi today.
The section of road suffered extensive damage and erosion in flood and storm events in 2022 and since that time, Tamworth Regional Council has undertaken design work to reinstate vehicle access along George Street and repair the erosion while awaiting funding.
Funding to repair the intersection was secured in 2025 through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) before a construction contract was issued in October 2025 to Stripes Civil Pty Ltd.
Since that contract was issued, approvals for works within the waterway have been sought to enable the works to commence.
"We were waiting on these final approvals so we could start construction," Murray Russell, Manager Operations at Tamworth Regional Council, said.
"Once we obtained them, we had construction start as quickly as we could."
Stripes Civil are expecting the works to be completed by July 2026, weather permitting.
The intersection of River Street and George Street, as well as the majority of George Street, will be closed for the duration of the works. Traffic management and traffic signage will also be in place as well as a detour via Thomas Street to access River Street.
Works will take place between 7am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. There will also be work on weekends where possible to minimise the disruption to residents and road users.
The damage repair works come at a cost of $1.45 million, with the full cost provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state DRFA.
