More housing and services one step closer for Kippax

The ACT Government alongside the owners of the Kippax Fair are progressing a potential redevelopment creating more housing, retail and community facilities in Holt.

The milestone comes following an agreement by the ACT Government that the Kippax Fair owners are eligible for a direct sale process.

Negotiations will now take place to finalise the scope of the direct sale working toward finalising the terms of an agreement.

Minister for Planning Chris Steel said the government is progressing the direct sale of the site (located at Block 71, Section 51 Holt) with a proposal that would create jobs, build more housing and provide better services for the region.

"Canberra's population is growing, so it's important we continue to upgrade group centres with services to keep up with increasing and evolving demands," said Minister Steel.

"We're committed to revitalising Kippax with new and larger shops, community facilities and residences. This is something we know residents in Holt and West Belconnen have been eager for, so it's great to continue progress toward delivering the best outcomes for the community.

"We're closer to achieving the vision that was first laid out in the Kippax Group Centre Master Plan, and is currently captured in the Belconnen District Strategy. Work will need to continue in 2024 to finalise any sale, but this is a positive milestone along the way.

Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry said that West Belconnen is a great place to live and as our community grows, we're looking forward to bigger and better shops and community facilities.

A requirement to finalise a direct sale will include the approval of a Development Application (DA) for the redevelopment.

The community and interested parties will be able to have their say on the application in due course by visiting the planning website. Residents keen to see the plans should register for notifications through the DA Finder+ App and select the Holt area.

"We are very pleased with the government's decision to enter into exclusive negotiations to achieve a direct sale which will allow a modern and expanded retail centre to be developed.

"Our concept plans are for a completely new and expanded shopping centre which will revitalise the Kippax Group Centre with new and modern full-line supermarkets, speciality shops, food and dining options, under-cover parking and community facilities and parks."
