Delivering more housing and homelessness services for women in need is a top priority for the Rockliff Liberal Government.
Through Homes Tasmania, we are contributing $5 million towards a $9.2 million partnership with The Salvation Army to deliver 21 new social housing units for women on the Housing Register who are aged over 55 and are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Together with Homes Tasmania, we are pulling every possible lever to help increase supply and build more homes, like these ones, faster.
This Salvation Army Housing development in Moonah is one of many projects the Rockliff Liberal Government is helping fund, through Homes Tasmania, to specifically improve the lives of Tasmanian women in need.
"The Government recognises that women are disproportionately affected by homelessness and acknowledges that we have a responsibility to help and provide for our most vulnerable residents," Minister Barnett said
"And that is what the Tasmanian Government is working hard to do – deliver more housing for Tasmanians in need through projects such as this 21-unit development.
"The Rockliff Liberal Government is also investing record amounts into new housing and homelessness programs, with more funding per capita than any other state."
Homes Tasmania funds eight crisis and transitional accommodation services for women and girls, and 13 additional crisis and transitional accommodation services that are available for both men and women, and we are working to increase the supply of homelessness accommodation around the State.
"As part of many hundreds of new social and affordable homes to be delivered in the second half of this year, there are over 100 units of homelessness accommodation in our construction pipeline, delivering even more housing options for Tasmanians in need," Minister Barnett said.
"We are developing a 20-year Tasmanian Housing Strategy, which will deliver a long-term plan on how we provide housing and homelessness services to support Tasmanians, with specific consideration of the inequalities faced by women.
"We recognise the barriers and challenges women face in securing safe accommodation, which is why we invest over $36 million each year in specialist homelessness services," he said.
Women in Tasmania can access a range of additional housing options, including brokered emergency accommodation, social housing, supported accommodation, homelessness accommodation and Family Violence Rapid Rehousing.
Homes Tasmania set an ambitious target of 1500 homes and units by today, June 30, and thanks to our community housing providers, the construction industry and Tassie's hard-working tradies we are likely to deliver around 1400, including a record number in June.
All Tasmanians deserve safe and secure accommodation, which is why the Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering the biggest social and affordable housing plan in the state's history - a massive 10-year, $1.5 billion plan to deliver 10,000 homes by 2032.
