More Social Homes Open In North Richmond

VIC Premier

The Allan Labor Government is welcoming residents into more than a hundred modern, energy-efficient social homes in inner-city Melbourne, strengthening housing security for more Victorians.

Minister for Housing and Building Harriet Shing today announced the completion of 144 new social homes at the Elizabeth Street site in North Richmond, delivered through the Labor Government's landmark Big Housing Build.

The one, two and three-bedroom homes are designed to be comfortable and sustainable, helping residents stay warmer in winter and cooler in summer, with Specialist Disability Accommodation also included on site.

Residents will also benefit from new shared spaces including a children's playground, improved green spaces, new pathways and better connections to the surrounding neighbourhood.

The project supported more than 950 jobs and is part of the Labor Government's record investment in housing, which is seeing Homes Victoria build more than 13,300 social and affordable homes across Victoria - with more than 11,800 homes already complete or underway.

Not-for-profit community housing provider Housing Choices Australia has been appointed to manage the homes under a 30-year lease, bringing its resident-first approach to the new community.

Construction began in 2023 and was shaped by extensive community engagement and consultation, helping ensure the precinct meets the needs of residents and the broader North Richmond community.

As stated by Minister for Housing and Building Harriet Shing

"Everyone deserves a modern, energy-efficient and comfortable place to call home, and these new homes in North Richmond are giving more Victorians on our housing waitlist exactly that."

"Through our $6.3 billion Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund, we're delivering 13,300 homes across the state - with even more in the pipeline."

"Unlike the Liberals and the Greens whose only plan is to block, oppose, and complain, we're getting on with the job of building long-term social and affordable homes where Victorians need them - creating positive and lasting change for families across the state."

As stated by Member for Northern Metropolitan Enver Erdogan

"These new homes give more Victorians a place in one of Melbourne's most established suburbs, combining modern design and energy-efficient features with easy access to schools, public transport, jobs and local services."
