More Tasmanian schools to be powered by solar

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on our election commitment to power more of our education facilities with renewable energy while also supporting Tasmanian businesses.

As part of the 2021 election, this Government committed $5 million to the Renewable Energy Schools Program, funding solar panels at more than 100 schools over four years.

Works to install new solar systems at the first group of school sites are expected to be completed by February 2023.

Today, I can announce the next tranche of school sites to receive new solar systems, with installation of these systems to be completed in September 2023.

Latest school sites announced:

  • Albuera Street Primary School
  • Andrews Creek Primary School
  • Boat Harbour Primary School
  • Bagdad Primary School
  • Bridport Primary School
  • Brighton Primary School
  • Lilydale District School
  • Mount Stuart Primary School
  • New Town Primary School
  • Northern Support School
  • Parklands High School
  • Scottsdale High School
  • Sheffield District School
  • Somerset Primary School
  • South Hobart Primary School
  • Sustainability Centre (Hobart College)

Savings generated from the installation of solar panels at our school sites will be reinvested to fund further solar installations and sustainability improvements in our schools.

The Government is also developing an Emissions Reduction and Resilience Plan for Government operations under Tasmania's nation-leading climate change legislation. The Plan will build on the actions already underway, like the Renewable Energy Schools Program, to reduce emissions across Government and boost the resilience of our operations.

The Renewable Energy Schools Program is part of our Government's strong commitment to investing in renewable energy while also growing Tasmania's economy.
