Morocco Visit By Torture Rapporteur Postponed

OHCHR

GENEVA - The official visit to Morocco of Alice Jill Edwards, the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, due to take place from 23 March to 2 April 2026, has been postponed to a later date at the request of the Government.

The Government's decision follows a last-minute declaration that Monday, 23 March 2026 will be a public holiday for all state administrations and local authorities on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr. This has complicated the Government's ability to reschedule important meetings.

"I will continue to work with the Government to identify alternative dates," said the Special Rapporteur, noting that she was scheduled to travel to various regions of Morocco and visit Laayoune.

"I would like to thank all stakeholders who engaged in the preparation of the visit and in organising meetings in the country," Edwards said. "I invite them to continue sharing any relevant information to allow me to continue to assess the situation in Morocco while waiting for the new dates of the visit to be confirmed."
