Morocco: Women Shift from Social Aid to Insurance

As part of its efforts to support Arab countries in reforming their social protection systems, ESCWA, in partnership with the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ), convened a peer exchange workshop on modalities for economic empowerment of social assistance beneficiaries.

Held in Rabat on 3 and 4 June, the workshop brought together senior policymakers, technical experts, and representatives from several Arab countries, alongside regional and international organizations, to exchange experiences and discuss practical approaches to help women's transition from social assistance to sustainable employment and social insurance coverage.

Drawing on regional reform experiences and Morocco's ongoing social protection transformation, participants explored innovative solutions to promote economic inclusion, including skills development, AI-enabled job matching, and stronger coordination among institutions. Discussions highlighted the importance of expanding women's participation in the labour market and enhancing their long-term economic resilience.
