Motorists arrested for drink driving in Alice Springs

Northern Territory Police were left speechless on pulling over a 23-year-old man who was recorded travelling twice the speed limit and returned a positive result for drink driving.

Around 3:15am on Sunday, members of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit observed a vehicle travelling at high speed on Wills Terrace towards Stuart Highway, Alice Springs.

Officers stopped the vehicle on Railway Terrace where the driver was breath tested and returned a positive roadside breath test before returning a Breath Analysis of 0.121BrAC, which is more than double the limit.

Sergeant Conan Robertson of the Southern Traffic Operations Unit said there was no words for the idiocy of the man's actions.

"2018 was one of the worst years on NT roads with about 45 per cent of all road related fatalities alcohol related and 25 per cent involving excess speed," said Sgt Robertson

"A child at school would know that drink driving and speeding are behaviours that are dangerous to all road users, but this 23 year old just didn't care.

"I am thankful that no one was hurt by his reckless and dangerous actions and believe that police have prevented an accident, be removing him from our streets."

The man was issued with a Notice To Appear before the Alice Springs Local Court on September 11, 2019.

Northern Territory Police dealt with a number of traffic related incidents throughout the weekend in Alice Springs.

During an 11 hour period Northern Territory Police arrested;

  • A heavily intoxicated 47-year-old man who ultimately failed a breath analysis.

"He was affected by alcohol to the extent that he was unable to complete a breath analysis, how does he think he can drive a vehicle?"

The man was arrested and charged with one count each of;

  • Drive a motor vehicle while disqualified
  • Fail to provide breath for analysis
  • Drive unregistered motor vehicle
  • Drive uninsured motor vehicle

Other traffic incidents included;

  • A 45-year-old woman was arrested after she returned a road side breath test of .137 per cent. She was charged with one count each of Drive a motor vehicle while unlicensed and Drive Medium range blood alcohol content.
  • A 17-year-old woman was arrested after she was found driving with two unrestrained children in the vehicle and returned a road side breath test of .156per cent.
  • A 48-year-old man who returned a road side breath test of .217per cent and was found in possession of a dangerous drug.

"The scary thing about this incident, is that this person was driving around the CBD area in this state when school kids were going home. This is brazen, reckless, stupid behaviour."

  • A 36-year-old man who returned a road side breath test of .288per cent was arrested and transported to the Alice Springs Watch House. He was charged with Driving a motor vehicle while unlicensed and Drive High Range Blood Alcohol Content.

"These people have not just 'made a mistake', as they were aware they were drunk, they just didn't care. They were reckless and stupid and happy to put other peoples' lives at risk.

"As a community we can no longer tolerate this behaviour and we all need to speak up to stop it. People continue to die on our roads, so tell your friends and families that drink driving is not ok."
