Police are urging all motorists to slow down and obey the speed limit following traffic operations this morning in Old Beach, Brighton, and Kingston where 40 drivers were detected speeding.
Between 6.30am and 8.30am, Southern Road Policing Services conducted a targeted operation on East Derwent Highway between Otago and Old Beach. Concerningly in the two-hour option, police detected:
- 19 drivers exceeding the 80 km/h speed limit.
- One provisional driver at 105 km/h. They will receive a fine of $372 and 3 demerit points.
- One driver at 112 km/h. They will receive a fine of $639 and 5 demerit points.
Further, Southern Road Policing Services then conducted a traffic operation in the 40 km/h school zone on Elderslie Road outside the Brighton School. Concerningly, in the one-hour operation, police detected:
- 11 drivers speeding
- One driver at 72 km/h in 40 km/h school zone. They will receive a fine for $639 and 5 demerit points.
In a third operation, between 7.30am and 8.30am on Huon Highway, Kingston, police detected:
- 10 drivers speeding
- One suspended driver.
"These results are extremely disappointing, and put motorists and pedestrians at risk of being killed or seriously injured in crashes on our roads," said Acting Inspector Nick Bowden.
"In recent days we've seen tragic outcomes from crashes on our roads, and they're a very real reminder that we all have a part to play in helping to prevent crashes to keep everyone safe on our roads."
"There is no excuse for speeding, especially in school zones when our most vulnerable members of the community are going to and from school."
"The message from police is simple – slow down and pay attention. Every death on our roads is one too many, and in the past few days we've had four too many people lose their lives."
