A 70-year-old Mount Compass man is due before Victor Harbor Magistrates Court to face a charge of ill-treatment of an animal to cause death or serious harm.
It is alleged that in October last year the defendant failed to take reasonable steps to mitigate serious harm suffered by a cow that had become stuck shoulder-deep in water in a dam on the defendant's property, and that the defendant left the cow to become exhausted and die.
A 36-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman are due before the Victor Harbor Magistrates Court, charged with ill-treatment of an animal under SA's Animal Welfare Act.
The charge is in relation to a severely emaciated dog found at the male defendant's Hayborough home in January 2024. The dog has since made a full recovery and been rehomed.
A 32-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man are due to face the Victor Harbor Magistrates Court charged with two counts of ill-treatment of an animal in relation to two dogs found at their Middleton property in August 2024.
Neither defendant was home at the time RSPCA SA inspectors attended in response to a cruelty report. Due to the condition of the dogs, the inspectors seized them and transported them to RSPCA's veterinary clinic at O'Halloran Hill. A veterinarian assessed the Great Dane and Border Collie as having body condition scores of 1/9, indicating both dogs were in extremely emaciated states. The dogs have since made full recoveries and were forfeited by court order to RSPCA SA in mid-January, enabling them to be rehomed.
A 39-year-old man from Smithfield is due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court, charged with two counts of ill-treatment of an animal under SA's Animal Welfare Act.
The defendant is alleged to have ill-treated two dogs on two separate occasions in January 2025 by feeding them THC (the main active ingredient in cannabis), which caused harm to both animals and required them to be hospitalised overnight.
A 35-year-old Morphett Vale woman is due before the Christies Beach Magistrates Court to face two counts of ill-treatment of an animal.
The charges are in relation to two dogs found in emaciated condition. One of the dogs also had pressure sores on his hocks, a chronic ear infection and chronic untreated dental disease. Both dogs remain in protective custody with RSPCA SA.
A 35-year-old man and his 36-year-old wife are due to face the Port Pirie Magistrates Court this month charged with five counts of ill treatment of an animal.
It will be alleged that the couple failed to provide appropriate and adequate living conditions and drinking water for 49 rabbits and five guinea pigs being kept at their Jamestown property, and that they failed to obtain veterinary treatment for a dog. The elderly dog was humanely euthanased. The other animals were seized and later forfeited by court order to RSPCA SA, enabling them to be rehomed.
A 41-year-old woman, her 24-year-old daughter and man are due to appear in the Murray Bridge Magistrates Court charged with a range of offences under the Animal Welfare Act 1985.
In 2022, a court order prohibited the older female defendant from acquiring or having custody of more than four cats, four birds and ten chickens. In July 2024, she was found to have custody of 51 animals. She is charged with breaching the 2022 order.
All three defendant are charged with ill-treating multiple animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and chicks.
It will be alleged that some of the animals required veterinary treatment while others were emaciated and living in filthy enclosures, without access to water.
The younger female defendant is also charged with ill-treatment of a snake, which was in an enclosure without a heat lamp or water when seized. The RSPCA seized 36 animals from the Murray Malley property. The defendants then surrendered 27 of those animals.
A 49-year-old man from Paechtown is due to appear in the Mount Barker Magistrates Court to face a charge of ill treatment of an animal. The man is alleged to have used a riding helmet to repeatedly strike a horse on its head, thereby allegedly causing unnecessary harm to the animal.
A northern suburbs woman is due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with breaches of the Animal Welfare Act 1985. She is subject to a pre-existing court order prohibiting her from acquiring or having custody of any animals. In June 2024, she was found to have custody of two emaciated dogs and a snake. She is charged with breaching the court order and ill-treating the two emaciated dogs. The RSPCA seized all three animals and has provided them with proper care.
A 52-year-old Athol Park woman is due to appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on allegations of dumping seven puppies on the Port River last year. Members of the public found the dogs shortly afterwards, which prompted an investigation by SAPOL leading to the woman's arrest.
Three defendants are due before the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on three counts of animal ill-treatment. The man and two women, all from Port Augusta, are alleged to have mistreated 27 cats that were found living in filthy conditions in a small unit, as well as two dogs which both had untreated health issues. One of the dogs was humanely euthanised due to the severity of its health issues, some of which were age-related.
A 53-year-old woman is facing 18 counts of ill-treatment of an animal in relation to 124 rabbits and seven budgies found at her property in Hackham West in August 2023.
It will be alleged that the animals were being kept in squalid and unsanitary conditions and that some of the rabbits were emaciated. It will be further alleged that the woman failed to obtain veterinary treatment for rabbits suffering from a range of medical conditions including a broken leg, infected eyes and abscesses.
The matter is due before the Christies Beach Magistrates Court this month.
A 48-year-old woman is due to face the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with failure to comply with a court order restricting the number of animals she is allowed to have in her care or custody. RSPCA SA inspectors attended at the woman's Lewiston property on 17 October 2023 and seized 86 dogs and puppies, three rabbits and two guinea pigs.
In August 2023, the woman was convicted on animal ill-treatment charges in relation to a Parrakie dog breeding facility that had more than 300 dogs and puppies. She received a three-month prison term, suspended on condition of a $500, three-year good behaviour bond.
A 25-year-old woman is due before the Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with ill-treatment of a dog, who was found in a severely emaciated state at an Elizabeth Grove property in April 2024. The defendant agreed to surrender the dog to RSPCA SA, and he made a full recovery in care before being rehomed.
