  • $2.8 million upgrade underway at Mount Isa Courthouse with project scheduled for completion in late-2025.
  • Refurbishment includes an expanded registry space, a second Magistrates chamber, and a new public counter.
  • Permanent second Magistrate and support staff locked in as part of $54.4 million Making Queensland Safer commitment to support justice system and deliver Faster Access to Justice for victims.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering Faster Access to Justice for North West Queensland, with a $2.8 million upgrade to the Mount Isa Courthouse now underway and the Budget locking in a permanent second magistrate for the region.

This major investment underscores the Government's commitment to providing modern, secure, and efficient justice infrastructure across the State, no matter where people live.

Driven by rising demand on court services, the courthouse registry is receiving a comprehensive refurbishment to boost capacity, accommodate additional staff, and enhance day-to-day operations.

Construction began in June after V2R Projects was awarded the tender by the Government earlier this year, with the project on track for completion by the end of 2025.

Key features of the refurbishment include:

  • Expansion of the registry office to support additional full-time staff.
  • A refurbished public counter and enhanced storage facilities.
  • A second Magistrates chamber for the recently appointed Magistrate.
  • Replacement of the ageing CCTV system with a modern, high-security solution.

The 2025/26 Budget has also provided funding for a permanent second magistrate and support staff as part of a $54.4 million Making Queensland Safer commitment to better support the justice system.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity Deb Frecklington said the funding for the Mount Isa region demonstrated the Crisafulli Government's commitment to govern for the whole of Queensland.

"This is about delivering real outcomes for regional Queenslanders and the budget commitment for a permanent second Mount Isa magistrate will help us deliver Faster Access to Justice for people across this part of our great State," the Attorney-General said.

"The courthouse upgrades will also ensure people in Mount Isa and the North West continue to receive the same high-quality justice services as those in the South East.

"We're proud to be a government for all Queenslanders, investing in infrastructure that strengthens communities and supports the people who live and work in them.

"These improvements will make a meaningful difference for registry staff, magistrates, and the public, creating a safer and more functional courthouse environment."
