Multi vehicle fatal collision in Diggers Rest - update

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives continue to investigate and appeal for public assistance following a fatal collision in Diggers Rest yesterday.

It is believed a truck carrying grain collided with a number of vehicles on the Calder Freeway near the Bulla Road overpass about 2.30pm.

A two-year-old Caulfield South girl, a rear seat passenger in a car carrying four people, sadly died at the scene.

A 35-year-old man, a 37-year-old woman and a one-year-old girl, from the same vehicle and all from Caulfield South, were taken to hospital.

The woman and girl remain in hospital in a critical condition and the man remains in hospital in a stable condition.

A man driving a Toyota Hilux, aged 62 from South Melbourne, was trapped under the truck until freed by emergency services.

He has also been taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Two people in another vehicle escaped serious injury.

The truck driver, a 42-year-old Donald man has been released pending further enquiries.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Investigators are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage that may have been in the area at the time of the collision.
