Work starts in August on the final section of Mungo Brush Road upgrades within Myall Lakes National Park thanks to the Australian and NSW Governments' Infrastructure Betterment Fund.
The final package of work is focusing on a 4.7-kilometre section of road between Mungo Brush Campground and the Bombah Point Ferry's northern access ramp and is expected to be finished by Christmas 2026.
Residents and businesses using Mungo Brush Road will see changed traffic conditions including traffic control, a contraflow and heavy vehicle movements during construction.
Occasional short delays should be expected along with increased truck movements, with construction work mostly occurring between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Drivers are reminded to obey all temporary speed limits, traffic controls and signage in place throughout the construction period to ensure the safety of both road users and workers.
This section of road has historically experienced significant flood damage and extended closure periods - including impacts from the 2024 and 2025 floods.
Mungo Brush Road's upgrades will provide greater resilience to flooding, damage and closures, along with improved road-user safety. The work should be completed by Christmas.
Works will strengthen road pavement, upgrade stormwater drainage systems, improve driver safety and install rock protection in areas that were eroded during flood and storm events.
Mungo Brush Road is a vital transport link connecting Hawks Nest with the Bombah Point ferry providing year-round access to Myall Lakes National Park, camping areas and popular holiday spots.
Funding for the project was announced in May 2024 under the Infrastructure Betterment Fund, a joint Australian and NSW Government initiative to rebuild disaster-affected infrastructure to a stronger, more resilient standard.
The first stage of the project has already repaired pavements and resealed road starting from the southern park boundary near Hawks Nest, extending 6 kilometres north.
