The 47th session of the World Heritage Committee (47 COM) is set to take place in Paris from 6 to 16 July. The World Heritage Committee (the Committee) will meet to deliberate important World Heritage matters.
The Committee, a governing body of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), is responsible for identifying and protecting sites of outstanding universal value. Each year, the session is an opportunity to:
- review new nominations for inscription on the World Heritage List
- assess the condition of listed sites
- ensure adequate management of the World Heritage Fund.
Murujuga World Heritage nomination
The Murujuga Cultural Landscape in Western Australia is one of the places being considered for inscription on the World Heritage List at 47 COM. If listed, it will be officially recognised as a site of great cultural and universal importance.
We have worked closely with the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and the Western Australian government on this nomination. It has been led by Ngarda-Ngardli, the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the landscape.
If listed, Murujuga Cultural Landscape will become the second place in Australia recognised on the World Heritage List solely for its First Nations cultural heritage values. It follows the listing of Budj Bim in 2019. Other key events for Australia at 47 COM include:
- approval of an updated place name for K'gari
- consideration of conservation efforts for the Great Barrier Reef, Greater Blue Mountains, and Gondwana Rainforests
- a First Nations event, funded by Australia
- a capacity building event, featuring Australia.
As a State Party to the World Heritage Convention, Australia supports global efforts to protect and conserve the world's most important cultural and natural sites-for current and future generations.
We will provide updates as 47 COM progresses, and key decisions are made.
