MXGP Brings $20M Boost as Motorsport Hits NT

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP government is cementing the Northern Territory's place on the world stage, delivering a motorsport world-first with the MXGP of Australia set to roar into Darwin in just four days.

For the first time, the Top End will host the biggest names in global motocross, going head-to-head on a purpose-built international track, down at Hidden Valley Motor Sports Complex, designed by track experts Protraxx.

From Friday, Territorians will experience three full days of world-class racing, with the excitement starting early as fans head to the Darwin Waterfront for a rider signing session - bringing the community face-to-face with the sport's global superstars.

Minister for Major Events and Tourism and Hospitality Marie-Clare Boothby said the event demonstrates the CLP Government's determination to deliver jobs, investment and certainty for Territorians.

"This high-profile event is more than a sporting milestone, it puts the Territory on the global stage and showcases our ability to host iconic sporting events," said Ms Boothby.

"It will deliver both high-octane action and a huge boost for the Territory, attracting visitors, boosting local businesses and contributing an estimated $20.9 million to our economy each year until 2029.

"32,000 attendances are expected across the three days, and tickets are selling fast - fans will see the world's best motocross riders right here in the Top End and experience our unique lifestyle, from our incredible tourist attractions to our amazing hospitality offerings."

The CLP Government is delivering the Territory's biggest year of motorsport ever, which will attract a combined total of 100,000 attendances from locals to interstate and international visitors.

The event will feature motocross heavyweights including Romain Febvre (FRA), Tim Gajser (SLO), and Glenn Coldenhoff (NED) in the elite MXGP category, while rising stars such as Sacha Coenen (BEL) and Kay de Wolf (NED) compete in MX2.

Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle said the return of world's best riders to Australia after 24 years was a momentous occasion.

"The world championship athletes are fast, fearless, supremely gifted and extraordinarily competitive, and they'll all be pushing hard to end the 2025 season on a high," he said.

"The event also presents an enormous opportunity for local wildcards to impress on the world stage, and to see Australia's best juniors competing in the MA Motocross State Challenge is an experience they'll never forget."

Motorcycling Australia NT CEO Cilla Thomas said hosting the MXGP of Australia in the Territory is an incredible opportunity for the local community.

"For our local riders, lining up against the best in Australia on a purpose-built international track is the stuff dreams are made of - it's their chance to showcase their skills, determination, and what being 'Territory Tuff' is all about," she said.

"For fans, it means world class racing in our own backyard, with the chance to cheer on the Territory Dingoes as they put their grit, talent, and Territory spirit on the global stage.

"We're proud the Northern Territory has stepped up to host this event with a venue that matches the prestige of MXGP."

Don't miss history in the making.
