- Applications now open for the second and third intake of NAB's 2025 StarCamp Internship program
- Intensive 10-week bootcamp to help Aussies upskill to pursue a career in tech
- More than 90% of StarCamp interns converted to permanent positions with NAB
After working as a doctor for five years, Melbourne-based Bernadine Dao faced a pivotal decision: was it time for a career change?
"I wanted to explore a different way of thinking," Dr. Dao said.
This realisation pushed her to make the leap into a new field - software engineering. Today, she's thriving as a tech graduate at NAB.
Dr. Dao is one of 460 global interns who have joined NAB's StarCamp program since its inception in 2021. The 10-week bootcamp has helped participants in Australia, India, and Vietnam begin their tech careers by equipping them with practical skills, industry knowledge, and the confidence to thrive in technology roles.
"A career change is a big decision. Before I applied, I took a short course in software engineering and StarCamp gave me the experience to start my tech career. I went in with the intention of securing a job at NAB. Thankfully, it worked out," Dr. Dao said.
With applications now open for the latest intake, Dr. Dao hopes her story inspires others considering a future in technology. And she's not alone.
From Classroom to Code
Sophia Ji, a former language teacher, is now working on NAB's software engineering initiatives after completing StarCamp.
"When I had my second child, I just felt like I needed a change," Ms. Ji, who is based in Melbourne said.
"StarCamp's structure was career-transitioner-friendly, with a mix of classroom lessons, hands-on project involvement, and professional development. I got to contribute ideas to replacing a third-party tool with a native NAB in house tool," Ms. Ji said.
Dr. Dao agreed, adding that the focus on teamwork during the course sparked her excitement for the tech industry.
"My team worked on a new recruitment tool aligned with NAB's leadership principles. Collaboration was central to this – we were constantly brainstorming, problem solving and learning from each other. This gave me the energy and hope to pursue a career in this industry," Dr Dao said.
Nurturing Future Tech Talent
With 94% of StarCamp's interns securing permanent positions at NAB, the program's success spoke volumes.
NAB Executive Kirsten Lange said the program opened a direct pathway into tech careers at the bank.
"We want to nurture the best technology talent at NAB. StarCamp immerses interns in our organisation, technological systems, infrastructure and language systems," Ms. Lange said.
"They are supported with curated learning and development programs, along with Cloud Certification, to build the skills they need to start their career in tech. They get to work on genuine business challenges, and network with senior leaders across the bank.
"It's rewarding to see them grow through this experience and set themselves up as future tech leaders."
A handful of last year's graduates have been given the rare opportunity to present their projects to NAB's CEO Andrew Irvine, highlighting their innovative solutions to customer-focused advancements at the bank.
Ms. Ji said she was grateful for this experience so early on in her tech career.
"Since starting the program, we've been treated like future engineers, because that's what we are," Ms. Ji said.
"Presenting to the CEO is an exciting opportunity. It shows how much the program values us and the work we do," Ms. Ji said.
