With NAIDOC Week just around the corner, the Northern Grampians Shire community will have the opportunity to take part in a number of activities to recognise and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year's theme for NAIDOC Week is 'Voice. Treaty. Truth. Lets work together for a shared future', and acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always wanted an enhanced role in the decision-making of Australia's democracy.
As part of NAIDOC Week, which runs from 7 July to 14 July, Northern Grampians Shire Council is partnering with Grampians Community Health, Stawell Neighbourhood House, Budja Budja Neighbourhood House and Stawell Secondary College to hold a number of activities to recognise the week.
At 11am on Friday 12 July at Stawell Neighbourhood House, an Acknowledgement of Country, smoking ceremony and dance will take place.
There will also be boomerang and rock art painting, displays from local indigenous artists, displays from schools and community groups, and face painting, making for a great event to end the school holidays.
A screening of the film 'Mabo' will also take place.
Children and staff at the St Arnaud Early Learning Centre have been busy producing artwork to help celebrate and recognise indigenous culture in the lead-up to the week.
Mayor of Northern Grampians Shire Council, Cr Kevin Erwin said, "It's an important week to recognise the traditional owners of our land."
"We certainly encourage the Northern Grampians Shire community to check out some of the events taking place and to take part in celebrating indigenous culture."
