Nation-Leading Plan Frees Surplus Land for Housing

Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and Minister for Industrial Relations The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie
  • Crisafulli Government launches nation-leading Land Activation Program to fast-track homes and address Labor's Housing Crisis.
  • EDQ-led program release under-utilised government-owned sites across Queensland.
  • The former Labor Government's failed Ground Lease Model proposed spending $1.7 billion of taxpayers' money for just 715 dwellings.
  • The Land Activation Program is part of Crisafulli Government's commitment to give more Queenslanders a place to call home and deliver one million new homes by 2044.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering more Queenslanders a place to call home by launching its nation leading Land Activation Program, which will unlock underutilised government-owned land by partnering with the private sector and fast-track housing delivery .

The Land Activation Program will enable the private sector to identify and register interest in underutilised government-owned land to be brought to market for development and deliver more homes for Queenslanders.

The Crisafulli Government is also implementing a strong "use it or house it" policy, where state land that is no longer required or has no reasonably foreseeable operational use, should be released and transformed into housing.

In the first Land Activation Program land release, more than six hectares of vacant land in Banyo will be brought to market, unlocking up to 400 new homes, with further sites to be released across the State soon.

During the former Government's decade of decline that led to Labor's Housing Crisis, housing lot approvals slumped by 29 per cent, leading to record-low rental vacancy rates, skyrocketing social housing waitlist and the lowest home ownership rate in the country.

A KPMG report into Labor's failed Ground Lease Model – recently uncovered by the Crisafulli Government – highlighted the estimated cost of the former Government's program was $1.7 billion for just 715 dwellings.

The Land Activation Program is a key part of the Crisafulli Government's Securing Our Housing Foundations Plan to deliver one million new homes by 2044, to help fix Labor's Housing Crisis.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said the Crisafulli Government was getting on with the job of delivering more land supply to ease Labor's Housing Crisis.

"The Crisafulli Government is partnering with the private sector to fast-track thousands of new homes without wasting taxpayer's money, in contrast to Labor's half-baked plan to waste $1.7 billion on just 715 homes under its Ground Lease Model thought bubble," Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

"The Crisafulli Government's Land Activation Program is about delivering more places to call home for Queenslanders sooner and fixing systemic barriers to supply that the former Labor government created.

"The reality is there's land that had been left to just sit there with no planned use by Labor while Queenslanders struggled to put a roof over their heads.

"The site at Banyo has been fenced off and vacant for years, despite it being close to public transport, shops and schools.

"We have a lot of work to do to clean up Labor's mess, but the Crisafulli Government is determined to boost supply and provide a place for more Queenslanders to call home.

"Queensland is now open for business and we are getting on with the job, cutting red tape, accelerating approvals and bringing development-ready land to market."

Queensland Property Council Executive Director Jess Caire today's announcement was an important and welcome step toward delivering more homes for Queenslanders.

"Industry has long called for a clear and comprehensive audit of underutilised governmentowned land, because identifying and activating surplus sites is critical to unlocking the new housing supply our state urgently needs," Ms Caire said.

"This program represents a meaningful commitment to delivering more supply sooner and industry looks forward to working with government to ensure these opportunities translate into tangible more roofs over heads outcomes for Queensland families."

Economic Development Queensland will assess industry proposals for land releases using criteria to ensure sites that are genuinely surplus can be unlocked for housing.
