Your story, your choice
The Northern Territory Public Guardian and Public Trustee encourages Territorians to plan ahead during National Advance Care Planning Week
The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) is supporting National Advance Care Planning Week (16-22 March 2026), encouraging Territorians to think about what matters most and plan ahead for future health care and personal decisions.
This year's theme, "Your story, your choice," highlights the importance of documenting personal wishes so they can guide decisions if someone is unable to communicate their preferences.
The Northern Territory has a unique approach to advance care planning through the Advance Personal Plan - a single document that allows people to record their values, outline future health care wishes, appoint decision-makers and provide guidance about personal matters.
Public Guardian and Public Trustee, Beth Walker said planning ahead helps ensure Territorians remain at the centre of decisions about their lives.
"Every person over 18 in the Territory should have an Advanced Personal Plan. Advance care planning gives people a voice in future decisions and helps reduce uncertainty for families and professionals during challenging times."
To mark the week, the PGT will host community engagement sessions at public libraries across the Regional Darwin area and work with community organisations to raise awareness.
The PGT may also participate in local radio interviews to promote the campaign and encourage Territorians to start conversations with family and trusted supporters.
Advance care planning is relevant for people of all ages and backgrounds and can begin with simple conversations about what matters most.
