University of Wollongong hosts inaugural Early Career Researcher Conference, 4–6 November 2025
The University of Wollongong (UOW) will this week welcome emerging academics from across Australia for the inaugural Early Career Researcher Conference, a national event designed to empower and connect the next generation of researchers shaping the future of health, technology, sustainability and education.
Held from 4 to 6 November 2025 at UOW's Wollongong campus, the conference brings together early career researchers, senior academics and industry professionals from more than 15 universities. It offers a platform for collaboration, professional development and recognition of research excellence through keynote sessions, workshops and a new mentoring program.
Conference founder and co-convenor Dr Amanda Gigliotti, Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at UOW, said the idea was born out of challenges faced by early career researchers following the pandemic.
"This conference provides access to opportunities that many early career researchers have missed out on – the chance to be seen and heard, to build collaborations beyond their institutions and to gain the confidence to communicate their research with impact," Dr Gigliotti said.
"It's about strengthening the future of research in Australia by investing in those who will shape it."
Supported by UOW's leadership and senior research community, the conference is built around three interdisciplinary sub-themes:
- Health and Medical Research, Social, Emotional and Cultural Wellbeing – exploring the factors that shape physical, mental and social health and cultural resilience.
 - Future Industries, Education and Governance for Tomorrow's World – examining how innovation, education and policy can drive sustainable and inclusive industries.
 - Planet Health, Environment and Sustainability – tackling global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and caring for Country through research and innovation.

Keynote speakers include Dr Darren Saunders (NSW Deputy Chief Scientist & Engineer), Distinguished Professor Sharon Robinson AM, Distinguished Professor Willy Susilo, Professor Petrea Redmond, Distinguished Professor David Boud and Dr Jack Pascoe.
The conference coincides with UOW's 50th anniversary as an independent institution, celebrating five decades of research impact and community engagement.
"We've had incredible engagement from universities and industry across Australia. Wollongong is the perfect place to start this national conversation about the future of research," Dr Gigliotti said.
