Council acknowledged National Reconciliation Week with a flag raising ceremony on Tuesday 31 May 2022.
This year's theme 'Be Brave. Make Change' is a challenge to all Australians - individuals, families, communities, organisations and government - to be brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can make change for the benefit of all Australians, and build upon the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.
In attendance was Mayor of Fairfield Frank Carbone, Deputy Mayor of Fairfield City and recently elected member for Fowler Dai Le, and Councillor Kevin Lam together with members of the local Aboriginal Advisory Committee. Muggera Cultural Enterprise led the ceremony with a traditional smoking ceremony, and Indigenous song and dance.
National Reconciliation Week is celebrated annually from 27 May – 3 June and highlights two important dates in the reconciliation journey; the anniversary of the successful Referendum (27 May), and the anniversary of the successful High Court Mabo decision (3 June).
