National Sorry Day Commemorations At Pavilion

Kiama Council

National Sorry Day 2026

Kiama Municipal Council invites the community to come together to commemorate National Sorry Day on Tuesday 26 May at The Pavilion.

The commemorations include a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony by Kristian Jarrett, address by Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald and an acknowledgement by local school students.

The event gets underway at 10am, followed by cultural and educational activities for school students from 11am to 12pm.

Mayor McDonald said National Sorry Day was a significant part of Australia's journey toward truth-telling, healing and reconciliation.

"National Sorry Day is an important opportunity for our community to reflect on the ongoing impacts of the Stolen Generations and to acknowledge the strength, resilience and survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples," he said.

"Sorry Day reminds us that reconciliation is not just about recognising the past, but about building stronger relationships for the future.

"Through listening, learning and working alongside our local Aboriginal community, we can continue to create a more inclusive and respectful Kiama for everyone."

Held each year on 26 May, National Sorry Day remembers the thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were forcibly removed from their families under government policies, known as the Stolen Generations, which continues to affect families and communities today.

The date marks the anniversary of the 1997 release of the Bringing Them Home report, which documented the experiences of the Stolen Generations and made recommendations for healing and reconciliation.
