Nearly 60 New Citizens Spotlighted at Civic Theatre

Australia's newest citizens were given a warm welcome to the Wagga Wagga community this week at Council's latest Citizenship Ceremony.

Fifty-eight (58) people from 15 nations across the world pledged their loyalty to Australia in front of family, friends, and supporters at the Civic Theatre on Tuesday 19 August.

Ranging in age from three years old to 60 years old, the conferees have come from countries including Burundi, Canada, England, Germany, India, Iraq, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.

Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said the ceremony reflected Wagga Wagga's cultural diversity, with 114 nationalities represented and 107 different languages spoken in our community.

"This is an important day for you, and as the Mayor of this City, I am privileged and proud to play a role in conferring your Australian citizenship," Cr Tout said.

"All our new Australians today have a unique story to tell. For some, the journey has been particularly difficult, and we welcome you with open arms.

"I know you will never forget where you have come from – and nor should you – your past is part of your story, that combined with what you do in your life from today will contribute to what Australia will become tomorrow.

"No matter your story, your history or your experience in life to now, seize opportunities with both hands.

"I trust that your time in Wagga Wagga and the region will be all you wish it to be."

It was the city's largest Citizenship Ceremony this year and comes just three weeks after the July ceremony saw 51 new Australian citizens welcomed to the community.

A total of 270 people have received their Australian citizenship at seven ceremonies in Wagga Wagga so far in 2025.

The next ceremony will be held on Wednesday 24 September
