New $2 million home for Far Northern firefighters providing good jobs and better services

Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services The Honourable Mark Ryan

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Commissioner Mike Wassing were joined by Member for Cook Cynthia Lui to officially open the new $2 million Mossman Fire and Rescue Station today.

Minister Ryan said the former station built in 1948 was no longer fit for purpose.

"The Mossman Fire and Rescue Station has been part of the tight-knit community for 74 years and will continue its proud tradition of supporting and protecting the local community," Minister Ryan said.

"This state-of-the-art facility includes two appliance bays, equipment and breathing apparatus rooms and practical training area. ''

Ms Lui said the project had provided a boost to the local community with six jobs created and local contractors engaged for the construction.

"It is crucial that not only are we getting better services but we also are getting more jobs while ensuring the community is protected,'' Ms Lui said.

Deputy Commissioner Wassing said the updated facility would better enable firefighters to work hand-in-hand with the Mossman community to prevent and respond to disasters.

"This is an exciting and important development for the area and the new station will help us continue to meet the growing needs of the community," Deputy Commissioner Wassing said.

"The range of incidents Mossman firefighters respond to is vast and this new station is equipped with the latest tools and technology to ensure we continue to meet the needs of the community.

"I give my sincere thanks to Kevin and Danielle Bellero who assisted the Mossman crew during times of need. Their support guaranteed the continuation of Mossman Fire and Rescue station's first-class service."

An Assistant Commissioner's Unit Commendation was presented to the Mossman Fire and Rescue Service crew for their sustained operational response and community engagement events throughout the construction of Mossman Fire and Rescue Station.

In addition, an Assistant Commissioner's Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Kevin and Danielle Bellero for providing a building for the temporary Mossman Fire and Rescue Station between 2017 and mid-2022.
