Major works on the new Birkbeck Drive roundabout are progressing and remain on track for completion later this year, strengthening a crucial link to the expanding northern corridor of the Rockhampton Region.

The $6.35 million project, jointly funded by Rockhampton Regional Council and the Queensland Government, is scheduled for completion by September 2026.

The project is now moving into its next phase, with Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) set to temporarily close a section of Alexandra Street between Wade Street and Birkbeck Drive from Monday 30 March 2026, for approximately 12 weeks to late June 2026.

This closure will allow Council to connect the new Birkbeck Drive roundabout with Alexandra Street, while TMR completes bridge footings and the central pier for the new Alexandra Street overpass, part of the Rockhampton Ring Road.

To support the closure, the new roundabout will be partially opened, with a detour directing motorists via McLaughlin Street and Johnson Street, maintaining two‑way traffic.

Traffic control on McLaughlin Street will continue to operate for ongoing Ring Road works and motorists should allow an additional five minutes when travelling through the area.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said it's encouraging to see the Birkbeck Drive roundabout continuing on schedule.

"It's great to see this project moving ahead as planned, especially as we continue to see strong growth in the Parkhurst area with new housing estates coming online.

"We're also seeing ongoing industrial development in the area, and that growth needs reliable, well designed transport infrastructure to support it.

"This roundabout is a critical link in the northern corridor and will improve safety, traffic flow and access for residents, businesses and freight.

"It's great to work with the Queensland Government to deliver this infrastructure, supporting jobs, growth and the long term future of our region."

Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said the project was an important piece of work supporting the growth of Rockhampton's northern suburbs.

"We are getting so close to this project being finished, and it's really exciting to reach this milestone of partially opening the new roundabout for use," Cr Taylor said.

"While the next phase of works and detours may be inconvenient for motorists, it's a sign that the project is nearing completion.

"I just want to say a big thank you to the community for their patience while road disruptions have been in place and remind everyone to obey signage and drive to the conditions."

About the project

Construction on the roundabout began in June 2025 and will improve traffic flow and safety in the region's rapidly growing northern corridor.

It will also provide a crucial link to the upcoming Alexandra Street Extended project, that will provide access to new developments in Edenbrook and Ellida Estates.
