New Caledonia statement

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Australia acknowledges the peaceful conduct of New Caledonia's third referendum on independence under the Noumea Accord, and the enduring importance of self-determination to New Caledonians.

The third referendum resulted in a majority of votes cast on the day being in favour of remaining a part of France.

As a friend, close neighbour and fellow member of the Pacific Islands Forum, Australia extends our best wishes for the important discussions ahead and looks forward to continued cooperation between all parties to shape New Caledonia's future.

Australia looks forward to continuing to work with France in the Pacific and globally.
