New Data Reveals Who Pays Land Tax

New data released today shows the ages and areas of Victorians liable for land tax.

There are more than 250,000 Victorians with a land tax liability who own land valued between $50,000 - $300,000.

90 per cent have just one taxable property

Nine in ten Victorians who currently own land valued between $50,000 - $300,000 that attracts land tax own just one property.

Only around two per cent pay land tax on three or more taxable properties.

More than 86,000 are in their 40s or younger

The new data also reveals the age of Victorians within this land tax bracket.

More than 86,000 are aged under 50, including almost 48,000 in their 40s and more than 31,000 in their 30s. More than 51,000 are in their 50s.

The median age is 53. For most, these are the years when they are still working and paying down the mortgages.

Thousands live in Melbourne's fast-growing outer suburbs

The council areas with the most land tax payers in these brackets are in outer-suburban and regional Victoria

The council area with the second highest number of Victorians in this bracket is Casey, the fourth is Wyndham, and the fifth Greater Geelong.

The data shows where the taxpayers live, based on their recorded delivery address.
