New data shows 15% increase in number of city dwellers making move to regional and rural communities causing ongoing challenges

For many years, Kim Hunter was one of these city dwellers. As a mother of two children and disability sector professional, Kim had been contemplating a move out of the northern suburbs of Melbourne for a tree change to regional Victoria.

Yet after braving the big move, Kim did not suspect it would be challenging to find employment in her new home in regional Victoria. With over 10 years' experience as a Support Team Leader and living with a disability herself, Kim found she needed some extra help finding her next role.

"I tried to find new roles on my own at first, but it was a new area, and the job market was different to Melbourne. I thought it was time to ask for some help", said Kim when she decided to reach out to atWork Australia. "I knew the transition would be difficult, particularly as I live with a disability and use a wheelchair to assist with my mobility– but I wasn't going to let that stop me or get in the way of a new opportunity in my new home," Kim continued.

With the support of atWork Australia, Kim was able to explore different ways to build on her 10 years of experience to help open new doors to meaningful work. Through an existing relationship with the Industry Training Hub, in Shepparton, atWork Australia was able to support Kim to undertake a fully funded Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40166).

Lisa Kerr, Career Facilitator, Shepparton Industry Training Hub said, "we knew that undertaking the Certificate IV qualification would enable Kim to use her skills in the disability sector more broadly to train others".

Brad Broadhurst, Job Coach, atWork Australia Shepparton said, "Kim is a fantastic, passionate Team Leader but we knew we needed to think outside the square to find her next role that suited her significant capabilities and most importantly, find something Kim is passionate about. We are proud to work alongside Lisa and her team at Industry Training Hub to support Kim to meet their goals."

Following the training, atWork Australia proudly supported Kim to secure her a new role at GoTafe Shepparton as an Equitable Learning Support Lead.

"I feel so confident now in my new role especially after completing my training. It wouldn't have happened without atWork Australia. I would never have even attempted to do something like this before. It made me feel good that someone could help me to see my strengths and the things I'm capable of," said Kim.

At atWork Australia, we recognise the importance of investing in employee learning and development and the benefits this can have, not only to the individual, but the businesses they are employed in. That is why we provide pre-employment practical help, in addition to In-Work Support, to encourage long term employment.
