New Festival Brings Free Live Music To Townsville

Enjoy a brand-new celebration of the best in North Queensland's live music at Wintergarden Festival of Music this weekend.

The inaugural two-day festival will run from 3pm to 6pm this Saturday and Sunday at Queens Gardens, giving residents and visitors a free orchestral music experience featuring the Great Barrier Reef Orchestra and 1 RAR Band, as well as local schools, community groups and North Queensland artists.

Division 3 councillor Ann-Maree Greaney said the festival was sure to be a hit with families and music fans.

"The whole Council team and I are very excited to be introducing Wintergarden Festival of Music to Townsville. This is a brand-new weekend of music which celebrates our region's incredible musical talent," Cr Greaney said.

"This is the perfect time of year to get outdoors and enjoy these free concerts while soaking in the atmosphere at Queens Gardens. Entry to this event is free, so all you need to do is bring a picnic rug and a bite to eat or grab something to snack on from one of the food vendors on site.

"I'm looking forward to heading along myself and hearing feedback from the community on this brand-new offering. It's no secret that Townsville is filled with live music fans, so I'm sure having two afternoons of music to enjoy outdoors will be very welcome."

The brand-new event is named in honour of Townsville's historic Wintergarden Theatre, which stood on Sturt Street and was a beloved entertainment venue from the 1920s through to the '70s before being demolished in 1991.

The Wintergarden Festival of Music will run from 3pm to 6pm this Saturday and Sunday at Queens Gardens. This is an all-ages, alcohol-free event. Entry is free.
