Moira Shire Council is working with the Tungamah community to preserve the historical significance of the former Tungamah Courthouse.
The former courthouse building has been vacant since 2016. At that time, Council resolved to step down as land manager and begin the process of returning the property to the Crown. Since that resolution, Council has funded and completed essential works, including waterproofing to bring the building to a safe and manageable condition.
Council is now seeking feedback from the community on the proposal to return the courthouse to the Victorian Government to allow for future opportunities for the site.
Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said Council acknowledges the historical importance of the courthouse to the Tungamah community.
"It is important that we find a solution to preserve the building for the long term. One option to do that is for the building to be in private ownership. The pathway to achieve this option is to return the building to the State government, and for the building to then be sold," Dr Emonson said.
"This consultation is an opportunity for the community to let us know if there is an ongoing need or viable future use for the building, or, whether it may be better suited to private ownership, where someone willing to invest the time and resources can restore it and give it new purpose."
"We're keen to hear from the community before making any final decisions about returning the site to the Victorian Government."
The consultation is open from Friday 8 August to Friday 29 August.
