New graduates and apprentices enter WA's energy industry

  • Cook Government committed to supporting energy training and development
  • Secure employment for 15 Western Power graduates today

Fifteen university and business traineeship graduates and apprentices graduated at Western Power today, with all securing employment within the business in 2023.

The cohort includes university graduates completing their three-year program of rotations in the energy sector, business trainees completing their one-year program, and graduate apprentices who have completed four-years' worth of valuable on-the-job experience.

Western Power's national accredited program, which includes 117 apprentices, teaches specialised skills and expertise across four streams: electrical, overhead linework, cable jointing, and heavy mechanical.

Training of apprentices requires a partnership between the apprentice, depot teams and the registered training organisations to deliver certification training.

Western Power is currently recruiting for its 2024 intake of apprentices and trainees.

Successful candidates will be notified in December 2023 and start their skills development pathway in January 2024.

As stated by Energy Minister Bill Johnston:

"Congratulations to the graduates and apprentices, and thanks to the hundreds of colleagues, family members and friends who have supported them on their journey.

"The Cook Government is committed to supporting education and training and recognises the value of apprenticeships across all industries.

"Vocational education and training play a vital role in supporting the community and the State's economic growth.

"It's excellent to see an increasing number of women taking up the opportunity to become apprentices, and I commend the great work Western Power has done to ensure a pipeline of talented employees."
