The City of Fremantle has developed a new Mural Artwork Guide to support artists, community groups, businesses, property owners and residents who are looking to create mural artworks in our city.
Murals have become a much-loved part of Fremantle's streetscapes, bringing colour, creativity and storytelling into our public spaces.
The new guide has been created to make it easier for anyone planning a mural to understand the process, from commissioning and approvals through to installation and ongoing maintenance.
The guide outlines how to:
- Confirm if approvals are needed (e.g. on heritage-listed or City-owned buildings)
- Ensure ownership and maintenance responsibilities are clear
- Commission artists fairly and in line with national standards
- Have mural artworks recorded in the City's Mural Register, helping protect them from graffiti removal and, with permission, feature them on the City's future Public Art Map, currently in development
Director of Creative Arts and Community Pete Stone said the guide will help promote more successful and sustainable mural projects across Fremantle.
"Fremantle's walls tell stories of our people, places and culture. This guide makes it easier for anyone to get involved while ensuring murals are planned, protected and celebrated into the future."
The City encourages anyone interested in creating a mural to read the guide before they begin.
