A new refurbished State-wide community mental health transitional facility has been opened by the McGowan Government in East Fremantle.
Located on Moss Street, the refurbished house, which was part of a generous bequest to Fremantle Hospital, has been given a $500,000 upgrade, creating a welcoming and home-like environment for people with mental health issues.
Hampton House, as it is now known, has been providing respite, support and hospital diversion services under various names and in various locations since 1992.
This service provides short-term residential care for people in the community to help avoid the need for admission to a hospital, and also helps people transition from hospital back to the community.
In its new home at Moss Street, the service will continue to provide short-term residential support for people diagnosed with a mental illness. The facility will initially have 10 beds, with provision to expand to 15.
The Hampton House recovery-based model of care aims to keep people out of hospital and helps them return to the community after a hospital stay.
The service cares for around 320 people a year.
As stated by Mental Health Minister Roger Cook:
"The McGowan Government is committed to helping meet the growing demand for community mental health support and treatment.
"The nurse-led, recovery-based model of care provided at Hampton House has assisted many hundreds of clients over the years, with more than 300 people accessing this service every year.
"Thank you to the skilled and compassionate staff at Hampton House who make a very real difference to the lives of people experiencing mental illness as they support them in their recovery."
As stated by Bicton MLA Lisa O'Malley:
"Services like Hampton House provide a vital service for people with mental health issues; meaning they can access support in their own communities.
"This is just another example of the McGowan Government's commitment to providing mental health services, and I'm pleased that people will be able to access clinical support so close to their family and friends in their own community.
"The service provides people with an avenue to access clinical support in our local community, as they make steps on their journey to recovery."
As stated by Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk:
"Hampton House is crucial to the Government's investment in mental health services in Fremantle.
"By delivering individualised care close to home, we'll reduce the need for hospitalisations and give people the best chance at successfully managing their mental health."
