The Albanese and Barr Governments have struck a deal to unlock around 4,900 homes in the ACT, including over 1,700 exclusively for first home buyers.
Both Labor Governments are determined to build more homes and help first home buyers achieve their dream of owning a home.
The ACT Government is the second jurisdiction to partner with the Albanese Government on its 2025 election commitment to help deliver up to 100,000 homes for first home buyers, in partnership with state and territory governments, and industry.
The Albanese Government will provide $250 million to support the delivery of homes just for first home buyer homes throughout the ACT. This includes:
- $37.5 million to unlock 75 homes through supporting infrastructure works in the Kingston Arts Precinct project.
- $12.5 million to support 150 homes through infrastructure investment in Weston Creek to unlock land for residential development.
- $100 million to support estate works across the ACT supporting 537 homes across the ACT by 2034.
- $20 million for enabling infrastructure works relocating high‑voltage powerlines in Kingston supporting 210 homes.
- $20 million to support water management infrastructure in the Deep Creek project in Molonglo Valley supporting 65 homes.
- $30 million to support landfill capping in the Ginninderry Regeneration precinct on the west edge of Belconnen supporting 86 homes.
- $25 million for the relocation of overhead power lines supporting 85 homes and expanding of existing housing development in the Ginninderry joint venture project.
- $5 million to support infrastructure investment expanding housing development in the Ginninderry joint venture project supporting 35 homes.
This commitment supports the Australian Government's $45 billion plan to build more homes and make them easier for first home buyers to buy. Other commitments include:
- Working with states, territories and industry to remove barriers to building through the National Planning Reform Blueprint, reforms to environmental approvals and a pause and streamlining of the National Construction Code.
- Training more tradies through our investments in Free TAFE and $10,000 apprenticeship incentives.
- Delivering 55,000 social and affordable homes for those doing it toughest through initiatives like the Housing Australia Future Fund.
- Helping more than 240,000 first home buyers to buy their own home under the 5 per cent Deposit Scheme.
- Launching the national Help to Buy shared equity scheme for those most locked out of home ownership.
This deal between the Australian Government and ACT Government represents a great step forward for Canberrans.
The former Coalition opposed this policy and the tens of thousands of homes that it's unlocking, alongside help for first home buyers and our other supply measures, including the Housing Australia Future Fund, tax cuts for Build to Rent developments, Help to Buy and the $3 billion New Homes Bonus.
