School students and local residents will be able to move more safely around the community with the Minns Labor Government today delivering on a major election commitment announcing $30 million in funding to construct a new pedestrian bridge across Forest Road in Hurstville.
The Government has also released the final design for the bridge with construction on track to begin in late 2026.
The pedestrian bridge, committed to by Labor at the last election, will deliver a major safety boost for students at nearby schools including Hurstville Public School, Bethany College, Hurstville Adventist School, Georges River College and Sydney Technical High.
Forming a key connection for local students and the broader community, the bridge will provide stair and lift access on both sides, making it accessible for pedestrians, people with mobility issues, prams and bikes.
Fencing will be installed on Forest Road and upgraded lighting along the bridge and approach will help increase pedestrian safety.
Motorists are also set to benefit from the project, with the bridge taking foot traffic off signalised intersections, reducing congestion on this key corridor.
Transport for NSW has worked with Georges River Council to understand local traffic needs to deliver a final design that will significantly improve pedestrian safety and provide better connections for the Hurstville community.
Premier of New South Wales and Member for Kogarah Chris Minns said:
"I've heard from families, schools and local residents for years about the need for a safer way to cross Forest Road, and we are delivering it.
"This bridge is the result of listening to the community and getting on with the job of improving safety where it matters most.
"Students and parents should not have to take risks getting to and from school. This new bridge will give the Hurstville community a safer, more reliable crossing for decades to come."
Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said:
"I welcome this major step forward on this project because safer crossings near schools and local facilities make a real difference for families going about their day.
"In addition to the safety benefits, this bridge will deliver improved access with lifts and stairs so it can be used by people of all ages and abilities.
"We have listened to the community and are moving ahead with a solution that improves safety while maintaining access along this busy corridor.
"I thank local schools, families and residents who took the time to share their feedback and help shape this proposal."
