The Glaze Shed is a paint-your-own pottery space that has opened in Seymour. Pick a piece, sit down with a tea or coffee, and paint it at your own pace - a great way to slow down, or to spend time with family and friends.
Melissa, a Seymour local and lifelong pottery enthusiast, has been passionate about the craft since childhood. Carrying that passion into adulthood, she saw an opportunity to open a creative space and share it with the community, and the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. "Seymour has a lot of talent," she says.
Finding the right location proved to be one of the biggest challenges, with Melissa searching for a space that was quiet yet still close to transport links and Seymour's shopping precinct.
To help navigate the process, she reached out to Mitchell Shire Council and was connected with its Business Concierge service.
"They were extremely helpful," Melissa said.
While one of the buildings she initially had in mind was ultimately unsuitable, having the right support made it easier to work through the challenges and find an alternative.
Despite encountering some scepticism along the way, Melissa remained focused on her goal and encouraged others considering starting a business in Mitchell Shire to take the leap.
"Do it. Put your best foot forward - you won't succeed if you don't try," she said. "Ask for advice. The Council has great information, and local business owners are a great source of support too. Come along to a Mitchell Business Network event - I got a lot of support through them."
