New indoor live-fire range for CFB Kingston

News release

November 22, 2018 – Ottawa, ON – National Defence / Canadian Armed Forces

Through it's defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, the Government of Canada is providing the women and men of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with the facilities and equipment they need to defend Canada and contribute to a more stable and peaceful world.

Today, Mark Gerretsen, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands, on behalf of Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan, announced that a new modular indoor live-fire training range will be installed at the Joint Task Force X (JTF X) facility located at Canadian forces Base (CFB) Kingston.

The new 25-metre indoor range will offer lane firing at fixed targets and simulated moving targets, as well as simulated operational scenarios requiring a quick response. Such exercises will assist JTF X members in maintaining proficiency in firing small arms such as 9 mm pistols.

Dymech Engineering of Greely, Ontario, was awarded two contracts of a total value of $11.8 million to install the range, and provide in-service support for an initial two-year period (with options for up to 18 years). The new range is expected to be up and running in the fall of 2019.

"Through our defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, our government is ensuring that the women and men of our Canadian Armed Forces are provided with the tools and equipment they need to do the important work we ask of them. Equipment like this new modular indoor live-fire range provides the Canadian Armed Forces with an excellent opportunity to train and grow, and will ensure they are prepared to achieve success in any mission they might undertake."

– Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan

"Our government is making the necessary investments to build a strong, agile and well equipped Canadian Armed Forces both here in Kingston and across the country. This new facility will help prepare our women and men in uniform to achieve success in operations and home and abroad."

– Mark Gerretsen, Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands

"The addition of the modular indoor range to the JTF X facility is another step in providing the unit with a self-contained, secure training area here at home. The range allows JTF X to conduct essential training required to prepare for real-world operations while minimizing the time members spend away from their unit, and away from their families."

– Lieutenant-Colonel Mark Mahood, Commanding Officer, Joint Task Force X

Quick facts

  • The acquisition contract to install the indoor range is valued at $6.2 million including taxes and options. The in-service support contract is estimated up to $5.6 million over 20 years, including option years.

  • JTF X is specially trained to collect and analyze information from human sources during overseas operations.

  • A new $51.9 million facility was recently opened for JTF X called the Sir William Samuel Stephenson CC, MC, DFC Building. The building integrates advanced security measures, vehicle maintenance and storage space and realistic training facilities, including specialized training areas, a simulator room and classrooms.
