New Library Kiosk To Open In Colac Otway

VIC Premier

Labor is upgrading local libraries to give communities access to what they need and save families travel time.

Birregurra residents will now benefit from a new automated library kiosk for easy borrowing and pick-ups.

Minister for Local Government Nick Staikos today opened the new $38,000 facility, which would greatly expand library options for those living in the area.

The Allan Labor Government invested $25,332 towards the project, while the Geelong Regional Library Corporation invested $12,666.

The library kiosk will support library programs such as Early Years Story Time and partnerships with the kindergarten, Colac Area Health, and the Colac Otway Shire.

Library kiosks are a cost-effective model for the future of regional library services and strengthen literacy, lifelong learning, digital inclusion, and community engagement.

The Living Libraries Infrastructure Program helps Victorian councils and regional library corporations provide high quality library infrastructure to meet their communities' changing needs.

Funding supports projects that deliver and demonstrate benefits for the community and aim to improve engagement and access to learning opportunities.

This government has invested $57.6 million dollars over the past 11 years into 176 library infrastructure projects with a total project cost of $522.4 million.

As stated by Minister for Local Government Nick Staikos

"Libraries offer free public access to information and technology, literacy support, training development and provide a safe, supported community space for local people to engage in a wide range of activities."

"Libraries are about so much more than books - they contribute to the connections that strengthen and enrich Victorian communities."

As stated by Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney

"The new library kiosk at Birregurra will give residents greater access to print and digital information, and support a culture that values reading, learning and social connection."
