These rule changes give operators clearer expectations and help ensure safe, modern maritime practices across the sector.
Maritime Rules Amendments 2025 (No 3) were signed on 10 December. They replace nine expired general exemptions and bring their requirements into the Maritime Rules.
The updates formalise practices already used in the sector, clarify safety and technical expectations, remove outdated radio requirements, and streamline parts of the certification and training pathway.
The updates take effect in two stages:
- from 28 January 2026 - escape arrangements, rescue boat launching, firefighting equipment, anchor chain testing and MF/HF radio
- from 31 March 2026 - sea service options, certification pathways and training requirements for several ratings.
