New members wanted for National Park Regional Advisory Committees

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is looking for people to join one of eight Regional Advisory Committees that provide input into how the State's national parks are managed.

Mr Rob Smith, Executive Director with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), said the opportunity to become a committee member comes around every four years and is a unique opportunity for those passionate about our environment and heritage.

'We are looking for people with experience in a broad range of areas, including conservation, heritage, agriculture, ecotourism, environmental education and science,' said Mr Smith.

'Each committee covers a different part of NSW and includes at least two Aboriginal representatives who have an association with that Country.

'We are particularly keen to receive applications from a wide range of people with different backgrounds and life experiences.

'Applications from women, persons with a disability, young people, people from different cultural backgrounds and even first-time park visitors are encouraged.

'National Parks cover around 9% of NSW and are for everyone to enjoy, now and into the future. That's why it's so important our Regional Advisory Committees reflect the diversity of the NSW community, Mr Smith said.

While there are no essential criteria for those wishing to nominate, it is expected that applicants have a strong connection to the national parks in their region.

Successful applicants will be appointed by the NSW Minister for Environment and Heritage for up to four years, commencing 1 July 2022.

Committees meet at least four times a year, either in person or online. Additional meetings and site inspections to national parks and reserves may be required.

These are voluntary positions. Travel and approved committee-associated expenses will be reimbursed.
