New Museum for WA shortlisted for national construction award

  • Project among a competitive field of national construction projects
  • New Museum project is the only WA finalist
  • Western Australia's New Museum is among six national finalists for the 2020 Australian Construction Achievement Award.

    The award showcases world-class solutions and excellence in construction projects.

    The New Museum submission highlighted the delivery of the project as a landmark cultural infrastructure project for the State, integrating contemporary architecture with stunning heritage-listed buildings.

    Construction of the Museum includes the new building, heritage restoration works and a central energy plant servicing the Perth Cultural Centre.

    A number of innovations and new technologies were implemented in the delivery of the New Museum including:

    • the first trial on a commercial site of wireless load controlling technology Roborigger, which holds a crane load steady in any given direction, without the use of a tagline, improving safety on the site;
    • design and delivery of the structural steel including the construction of a 17-metre structural steel cantilever above the heritage-listed Hackett Hall building;
    • design and installation of ceilings to manage the unique acoustics of the Museum; and
    • methods to provide seismic protection and care for the heritage-listed buildings.

    The project is being delivered under a two-stage Managing Contractor model. Multiplex was awarded the contract in 2016 and is expected to complete the base build late this year, ahead of opening in 2020.

    The awards ceremony will be held in April 2020. For more information visit https://www.acaa.net.au/2019-finalists/

    As stated by Culture and Arts and Heritage Minister David Templeman:

    "I congratulate the teams working on the project, from both the State Government and private sector.  To be shortlisted in a national construction award is testament to the calibre of this project.

    "The workmanship, detail and innovative design achieved throughout the buildings is exceptional, and a credit to the contractors working on the project.

    "The New Museum is a landmark building with dynamic visitor experiences that will significantly contribute to Perth's vibrancy and activation. It will be a major attraction for all Western Australians and visitors to our State."
