New Noongar meeting place to be built in Katanning

  • $92,000 State Government funding to build meeting place for Noongar people to gather and share culture
  • McGowan Government supporting the next phase of the Katanning Heritage Centre Project
  • A new purpose-built meeting place for Noongar people to yarn, share culture, remember the past and discuss the future is going to be built in Katanning as part of the Shire of Katanning's Heritage Centre project.

The centrepiece of the $92,000 meeting place will be a firepit arrangement, covered by an all-weather shelter to allow for gatherings, following a request by the Shire of Katanning.

In the future, the site may be used by local Noongar people for ceremonies, performances and the opportunity to share culture with the broader community.

The new community asset will add to the McGowan Government's $15.72 million Katanning Heritage Centre investment.

This investment is rejuvenating the town centre and advancing the Piesse Lake development, including a playground, welcome precinct, botanic garden and recreation area.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:

"The new meeting place will provide an opportunity for Noongar people to come together to share their culture.

"Yarning and storytelling is an important part of Noongar heritage and handing on culture to the next generation.

"In time, the Noongar community may choose to use the new meeting place to share their culture with the wider community or as part of education or tourism opportunities.

"The long running Katanning Heritage Centre project has taken shape, which also includes 30 fully serviced medium density residential lots, relocation of the Katanning Bowling Club and improved tourism and visitor services."
