The National Search and Rescue (NATSAR) Council has released its Strategic Plan 2026-31 to strengthen cooperation, capability and coordination across the national search and rescue system.
Every day, Australia's search and rescue system helps people who are lost, injured or in distress, providing confidence for people to live, work, travel and enjoy the outdoors knowing help is available when it is needed.
Search and rescue relies on the collective efforts of Commonwealth, state and territory police agencies, Defence, industry, volunteers and many other organisations working together to save lives. The plan sets the strategic direction for Australia's national search and rescue system over the next 5 years.
The plan identifies key priorities to strengthen national alignment, support people and enhance capability while preparing for future challenges and opportunities. Chair of the NATSAR Council, Alex Barrell, said delivering effective search and rescue outcomes requires strong national collaboration.
"Australia's search and rescue system operates across one of the world's largest and most diverse regions. This plan reflects our shared commitment to a nationally unified search and rescue system and the pursuit of better outcomes for the communities we serve."
