New positions to bolster Child Safety workforce

Roger Jaensch, Minister for Education, Children and Youth

The safety of children and young people is a priority for the Tasmanian Liberal Government and we are committed to improving the safety and wellbeing for those who are vulnerable and most at risk.

The Tasmanian Government continues to grow the Child Safety workforce across the state with a further $1 million to recruit 13 new Unit Coordinator positions.

These new positions, together with existing Unit Coordinators, will ensure that every Child Safety team in Tasmania will have a dedicated Unit Coordinator.

Providing much needed case-related administrative support, these roles will free up our Child Safety Officers to focus on direct work with children, young people and their families.

A Unit Coordinator's responsibilities will be varied and child-centred, ranging from coordinating paediatric appointments and vital recordkeeping in the Child Protection Information System to progressing travel applications for children and young people in care.

The Unit Coordinator positions also create exciting career pathways into Child Safety Officer positions, through on-the-job experience and training and support to obtain qualifications.

The new positions will be offered on a permanent, full-time basis and will commence as soon as possible.

This next stage in our support for the Child Safety workforce comes off the back of significant progress to reduce the vacancy rate amongst Child Safety Officers, with the services now at or approaching full staffing against permanently funded Child Safety Officer positions.
