New PVC Sciences Aims to Boost Industry Ties

The University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka has appointed Professor Charles Brennan as the new Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Sciences).

Currently the Chief Scientific Director of the Food and Nutrition Hub at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, Professor Brennan will join Otago in March. Until then, Professor Brendan McCane will be Acting PVC.

Professor Brennan's career began at Wye College in London, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Plant Science and later a PhD in Food Science and Nutrition at King's College London.

Since then, he has held several roles at tertiary institutions in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, where he has led transformative initiatives, mentored students, and built high-performing cultures that foster collaboration.

He was drawn to Otago's proud heritage as Aotearoa New Zealand's first university and its commitment to bold, future-focused research.

"This creates an environment where theoretical knowledge can be transformed into applied solutions," Professor Brennan says.

"It is this vision which resonates deeply with me – driving curiosity-led research that doesn't just advance scholarship, but actively strengthens industry, accelerates innovation, and contributes to a knowledge-based economy.

"For Otago, the South Island, and New Zealand, this means creating pathways where research translates into tangible benefits for businesses, communities, and the nation's prosperity. That challenge is exactly what excites me about this role."

He is looking forward to collaborating with world-class researchers and industry partners to shape transdisciplinary solutions for New Zealand's future.

"Otago has the potential to be the powerhouse of applied innovation – connecting deep academic expertise with commercialisation opportunities, regional development, and global networks.

"For me, this is about positioning Otago as the leading research-driven university in Aotearoa, one that not only produces knowledge but converts it into economic and societal value.

"It's an honour to help drive this vision forward and strengthen our alumni and industry connections worldwide."

Vice-Chancellor Hon Grant Robertson is excited about the appointment of Professor Brennan.

"Charles not only has an exceptional record as an academic in his own right, he has also demonstrated strong leadership and relationship building skills.

"He has deep connections internationally and with industry, which will be vital to Otago's success in the future years."

Professor Brennan replaces Professor Richard Barker who moves into a new role, driving the University's strategy for Queenstown and the Lakes District.
