New Reefwise Projects To Improve Water Quality

Four new projects will be funded through the $30 million Reefwise Farming Program. These projects will reduce run-off to improve water quality on the Great Barrier Reef.

This is one of many new programs that Australia is delivering to accelerate action to improve Reef water quality.

The Reefwise Farming projects will be delivered in collaboration with farmers, Traditional Owners and other partners.

They will support on farm-activities to:

  • reduce the impact of nutrient and pesticide pollution on the Reef
  • boost farm productivity and profits
  • promote sustainable farming.

The projects will:

  • work with cane farmers to improve irrigation efficiency
  • help farmers develop nutrient and chemical management plans
  • upgrade equipment to reduce pollutant loss
  • build farm business skills.

They will be led by NQ Dry Tropics, Reef Catchments, Burnett Mary Regional Group and Terrain NRM.

The Reef Trust funds the Reefwise Farming Program. The Reef Trust is Australia's investment program for the Reef.

The program is part of the government's $1.2 billion Reef investment.
